While I’ve had to constantly reinvent my closet over the years to keep up with the times, I never thought I’d have to throw jeans out.

But what I considered comfortable in my 30s just does not make the cut anymore! Women over 50 need to wear jeans that smoothen our lower belly, lift the derriere and are most importantly comfortable enough to move around in. I’m struggling to climb stairs and appear not out-of-breath, so I don’t need a pair of denim to cut my circulation on top of that!

Plus, having tight jeans with tough zippers and buttons can be a nightmare when it comes to bathroom breaks, or even changing clothes in a dressing room. It does take aging to realize the little things we took for granted when we were younger!

My favorite pair of jeans is now the Lee Waist Smoother Pull On, but I’ve also included a whole roster of mature woman-friendly jeans in the list. You’ll only find tried and tested best jeans for women over 50 here!

Top 8 Best Jeans For Older Women 2022

1. Lee Indigo Straight Waist Smoother Pull-On

Best Waist Smoothening jeans

Lee Indigo Straight Waist Smoother Pull-On

I’ve always liked Lee Jeans, and I picked up this pair the moment I saw the words ‘waist smoother’. These jeans didn’t disappoint in the waist department and do a great job of tucking in a little bit of belly pooch. The prime reason why I would avoid jeans is that I hated the waist cut-off that causes ‘muffin tops’. These jeans do not cause that problem!

A common reason why women my age stop wearing jeans is that they can get difficult to put them on and pull up. Trying to button up jeans after a big meal — we’re too old for that kind of torture! If you’re nodding your head as you read this: give pull-on jeans a try. They fit like PJs, with all the seriousness and put-together-ness of a pair of great jeans.

Here’s why these jeans are better than a regular pair: they have a flat front. So if you like tucking your shirt in ever so slightly, or don’t want a bulky button showing through your sweater: this is a great option.

  • Thick denim fabric
  • The jeans feature five pockets style.
  • Great for regular wear, doesn’t move around
  • Comfortable and breathable all year round
  • Flat front
  • Smoothens the stomach
  • Pull-on with fake buttons and fly
  • Great for thick thighs

  • The waist can be large for women with an hourglass body shape

2. Gloria Vanderbilt

Best Plus Size Jeans

Gloria Vanderbilt

Gloria Vanderbilt is a favorite for most women over 50, and it’s pretty clear to see why. These comfortable jeans are high rise and tapered at the leg, looking chic and versatile. I love the tapered leg, it pairs well with kitten heels for fancier occasions and still looks casual on your regular grocery run.

These jeans are one of the rare kinds that are well fitted to most body shapes, especially plus-sized women of different heights. Now, it’s no sisterhood of the traveling pants, but they do come in a nice variety of sizes.

I like that they’re tight on the hips and behind, but also have a bit of room on the leg. I personally can’t stand skinny jeans, especially in the summer, and it hurts my knees. These are also high waisted jeans, so they do a good job of tucking in your love handles and stomach!

Strangely enough, the different colors of these jeans seem to have slightly different measurements, so I’d suggest ordering a few and returning the ones that don’t fit, particularly if you’re in between sizes like I am.

  • High waist jeans that are slimming
  • Tapered leg for a sophisticated, chic look
  • Great plus size range and variety
  • Petite, Short, and Tall sizes are great for women of different heights
  • Functional pockets, easy zipper

  • Depending on how slim your legs are, this can look like wide-leg jeans instead of a tapered leg

If you’re looking for the same Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, but in standard sizing instead of plus-sizing: CHECK THE CHEAPEST PRICE ON AMAZON!

3. Lee Relaxed Fit Stiff Jeans

Best stiff jeans / Highest high rise jeans!

Lee Relaxed Fit Stiff Jeans

Lee is one of those classic American denim jeans brands that everyone swears by. I did my fair share of Lee, Levi and Wrangler jeans in my younger years, but now I’m not sure if I have the patience to break into stiff jeans anymore.

But there are plenty of advantages to stiff jeans. Stiff ones last way longer, never crease or dimple, and make you look polished all the time. While these legs are a bit wider than your classic boot-cut jeans, they’re high on the comfort factor.

Lee wasn’t kidding when they called this high rise. It goes past your belly button, sitting at the smallest part of your waist and accentuating those curves. I like doing a ‘french tuck’ with my blouse when I wear these because the zipper and buttons can sometimes show through clingy tops. If you’re one of those uber-fashionable women over 50 that can rock a short ‘cropped’ top, you’ll love the high waist on these.

  • The straight-fit jeans offer the desired fit for most buyers.
  • Baggy fit for extra comfort
  • The jeans will offer the highest comfort with a unique blend of fabric.
  • Stiff fabric that doesn’t crease or dimple over time
  • High-waisted for a flattering midriff silhouette

  • Stiff fabric has the downside of being no-stretch denim

If you’re looking for the same jeans as a taller woman, here are the Tall Relaxed Straight Lee Jeans.

4. Lee Indigo Straight Leg Jeans

Best Straight Jeans

Lee Indigo Straight Leg Jeans

Here’s another Lee product! ‘Riders’ by Lee are a sub-brand with the main difference being more stretch. Original Lee jeans have around 100% cotton, but these have spandex in them so they’re more comfortable and accommodate to fit your body shape better.

These jeans have a mid-rise design, so they sit just below the belly button and keep in the lower fluffy pooch area we all share (a common side-effect of pregnancy, C-sections, and age!).

While they have some stretch, they’re soft and comfortable on the skin. Just like the other straight-legged jeans on this list, these don’t hug your knees. The first thing I do when I try on a pair of jeans is sit down in them. Jeans can be uncomfortable in the crotch area and restrict leg movement, but these were so comfortable that I forgot I was wearing them. Definitely a good option for women who value comfort.

When jeans have some spandex and stretch in them, it automatically means they’ll last a few years less than stiff jeans. Who cares, when you’re comfortable enough to sit criss-cross-apple-sauce with your toddler grandchild?

  • Thick denim jeans with stretch
  • Creates the illusion of a small waist
  • The unique blend of fabrics delivers a soft and comfortable fit.
  • Great vintage color options

  • The legs are more slim-straight than a regular straight.
  • Better for hourglass women, may not fit women with a more rectangular shape

5. Chic Classic Collection Pull-On Stretch

Best Pull-on jeans

Chic Classic Collection Pull-On Stretch

My daughter laughed when I called these my favorite jeans! She thought they barely qualify as jeans, and they certainly look a lot more like denim pajamas. But wearing these has me downright spoilt.

They’re not as ‘chic’ (despite it being in the name) or classy (again, misleading name) as regular jeans, but they are sinfully comfortable. If I have to run errands or just put on a decent pair of pants to sit on the porch, these are my favorite pants.

They don’t have buttons or a fly, or even back pockets, so you have to wear a long top over them. They are rather slim on the legs, which suits my chicken legs fine, but women over 50 with thicker thighs may like something loose.

  • Slim legs
  • Pull-on elastic waist, perfect for women over 50
  • Can be thrown in the washing machine, no fading or bleeding
  • Great versatile shade of dark blue and dark wash
  • Cropped length options for petite women

  • Has to be worn with longer tops
  • No belt loops
  • Can be tight on the legs
  • Not loose fit jeans

6. Levi’s Classic Style

Classic Bootcut Jeans

Levi’s Classic Style

I am so glad that boot cut jeans have come back in style. But honestly, I’d be wearing them even if they hadn’t! My body shape is heavier on the hips with skinny legs, so a boot-cut style brings some proportion to the shape of my legs and looks stylish too.

I had an old pair of Levi’s 715 gray jeans that had split at the seams, so I was hoping I’d find a boot-cut pair that was a keeper while doing my research for this article. And boy did I! I actually prefer these to the 715, the fabric is much more comfortable and easy to wear for women over 50.

The shape is really flattering for mature women, and looks great with a pair of boots. If I could change one thing about these jeans, I would wish for deeper pockets, but that seems to be a problem for women’s jeans in general!

  • Boot cut jean style
  • Classic jeans
  • It is machine washable
  • It comes with a zipper closure and pockets

  • Some denim washes are more pricey than others

7. Pajama Jeans Skinny Fit Denim

Best Low Waist Skinny fit jeans

Pajama Jeans Skinny Fit Denim

I personally don’t know many women over 5o who like skinny jeans, but I’m including this product for the benefit of the doubt! While skinny jeans can never be as comfortable as loose-fit jeans, they do look fashionable, especially when paired with ballet flats.

If you’re athletic and don’t mind the tight fit, you might find these the perfect pair. I like the black jeans option, and the drawstring was a nice touch. They’re called pajamas because of the comfort, and I have to admit the fabric feels soft on the skin. However, I didn’t like the low waist, but that might be personal preference.

  • Soft fabric on the skin
  • Drawstring for waist adjusting
  • Stretchable material
  • It is easy to wear, and it will be great for a vacation.

  • Skinny jeans aren’t a favorite amongst women over 50
  • Low waist

8. Not Your Daughter’s Jeans:  Marilyn Straight Style

Best Premium Jeans / Most Durable Jeans

Not Your Daughter

Not Your Daughter’s Jeans! Now here’s a brand that’s specifically made for mature women over 50. These jeans in the shape ‘Marilyn’ (straight) are famous and come in no less than 35 colors. I’ve had the white jeans in this style for a year, so I was excited to try out some of the other colors.

Here’s why these are everyone’s favorite jeans: they use ‘lift and tuck’ technology. I don’t fully understand it, but it’s something about a cross-crease and hem that somehow makes your waist seem smaller, and accentuates your curves in the back! Sign me up.

They really do flatter my body type, and I have friends that refuse to wear any other jeans but these. Of course, they’re more high-end than most of the other jeans on this list, but it’s a great investment in a pair of clothing you wear almost every single day.

  • Very flattering for the waist
  • Great long-lasting fabric
  • Comfortable and warm denim
  • Lots of stretch in the fabric, great for women over 50

  • Warmer denim that’s not great for summer

Choose the Perfect Pair of Jeans – 9 Fashion Tips for Women Over 50

Tip 1. Choose the right kind of style for your body type.

  • Straight leg jeans are great for making your legs look longer.
  • Boot cut jeans are great for pear-shaped women with wider hips
  • Relaxed fit jeans look great on all mature women, but can be too casual.
  • Tapered jeans are a chic look that’s great for women with thicker thighs
  • Boyfriend jeans‘ are known to make your hips and butt look bigger, which is what some petite women prefer.

Tip 2. Know that stretch jeans don’t last as long

Older women care about comfort, and while stretch jeans sound comfortable, sometimes they refer to the skinny fit with lots of spandex in the denim fabric. These wear out faster, split at the seams, and hug your legs.

If comfort is what you’re after, opt for a relaxed and looser pair of jeans that’s not a 100% cotton. Lee Rider jeans are a great option. They’re not stretch jeans, but they’re loose and made from lighter denim.

Tip 3. Know your colors!

Not all blue jeans are alike! The shade of blue actually plays a really important role in your overall look. Most mature women like wearing jeans that have classic, muted shades. I would personally recommend staying away from bright blue jeans, as they tend to be the star of your outfit, and don’t match with a whole lot of options. Faded vintage blues look more classy and last longer.

Dark washes are great for the winters. Every woman should own a pair of black jeans, white jeans, and grey jeans!

Tip 4. Distressed isn’t all that bad

Your grandkids aren’t the only ones who can rock a pair of distressed jeans. Yes, these are the jeans that intentionally have tears and rips in them. You don’t need to go all out and look like you just got mauled in a cat fight, but find a pair with small patches of distressed denim and a raw hem. They can elevate a regular throw-on jeans and t-shirt outfit.

Tip 5. Stay away from low rise jeans

The rise of your jeans also plays an important role. High waist jeans and mid-waist jeans are great at flattening the tummy, but make sure the zip and denim fabric isn’t too bulky, or they can stick out through your shirt.

Low waist jeans are great if you’re wearing a thicker sweater or jacket on top where your waist won’t be too visible anyway. But they tend to be flattering for very few body types. If you can rock low rise jeans, more power to you!

Tip 6. Don’t put your jeans in the dryer

Air drying jeans go a long way in letting them stay as good as new. If you can, try soaking your jeans and handwashing them, but a delicate machine cycle is alright if you can’t be bothered. Just try to stay away from the dryer!

Tip 7. Pay attention to the weight of denim fabric

Like the quality of the fabric, look at the fabric weight before you bring the best product home. Remember, high-quality jeans made from denim are strong and heavier than cheaper weaves.

Denim with heavier weight is better than lighter ones. If a pair of jeans trousers weighs below 12 ounces, consider it as light-weight denim.

Low-weighted denim indicates the low quality of the fabric. You may feel a little stiff after wearing new jeans pants made of heavier denim in the beginning, but they will turn comfortable after a few days of use and wash!

Tip 8. Soak your too-stiff jeans

I know I’ve been advocating stiff jeans this entire article, but if it’s ever so much that you can’t sit down: you can still fix it. Soak your jeans in warm water and fabric conditioner overnight and then rise them out and let them dry in the indirect sun (not under harsh sunlight). Your jeans should now have some bend and flex to them.

Tip 9. Choose pull on jeans

Pull on jeans might be the best thing to happen to women over 50. They’re way more comfortable and are much easier to put on. These Lee jeans are actually pull-on jeans, but have a fake button and zip for the style factor. They also smoothen the lower belly.

If you just want PJs that look like denim, you can’t go wrong with these.
